Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
