The Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Place.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a challenging university examination than a new pop record from an artist who just had a last hit featured a global K-pop star. Split into 4 distinct sections and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing is nothing short of miraculous, with sole praise belonging to the artist. While this is not the first time project to fuse the past and modern styles, its stakes are far higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly on the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top string surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The song immediately shifts into the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly every track ends in a completely distinct point than where it started. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album involves navigating the gap between bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has become her first release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. That feat gets repeated on another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, Lux is a lavish feast where the guests around it, some tipsy on holy wine, flit between discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
