The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
