Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
